Spring is here but so are allergies

The sun is shining and you feel miserable once again. You have a constantly running nose, you have itchy watery eyes and the Sneezing never stops. Well it seems to be that time of the year when indeed, Mother Nature strikes again and it’s “Allergy Season”.

Allergies often occur when the immune system mistakes unharmful substances (allergens) as harmful to your body. In order to protect the body, your immune system produces IgE antibodies to that allergen, these antibodies then cause certain cells in the body to release chemicals into the bloodstream causing an allergic reaction.

The main cause for why a person becomes sensitive to some foreign substances is still not fully understood. The problem usually runs in the family with relatives who suffer from the same or relating conditions and also some non hereditary issues.

Allergies also tend to act up when you are stressed, suffering from anxiety or when you feel emotional. You first have an allergy attack, on top of that you have to deal with the stress of everyday work, home and study and then the next day your symptoms are worse because of it!

It is not uncommon for people to complain of stress making allergies worst or longer lasting especially the next day when the effects of stress lingers.

Common symptoms of allergies (which all of us who have allergies know about) include sneezing, itchiness in the nose, eyes, throat and skin, post nasal drip, dark circles under the eyes and even asthmatic symptoms like coughing, noisy breathing and a tight chest.

Doctors diagnose you by first going through your medical history and then by performing various skin allergy tests and/or a blood test.

To treat these allergies, besides the medication that your doctor gives you, you can also do a bit by following a few of these tips:

  • When mowing the lawn or dusting the furniture in your home wear a face mask to protect your nose and mouth from pollen and dust.
  • Mildew is another cause of allergies; rid the home of this by keeping outdoor plants instead of indoor plants.
  • Pets are lovable but can also cause allergies because of the dander that they shed, so wash your pets regularly.
  • Wash weekly and alternate your pillows, blankets and clothing to minimize dust mites. You can also protect your mattress and pillows from dust mites and dust by covering them in plastic cloth.
  • Minimize stress by making use of a few relaxation techniques such as doing yoga, stretching often, meditating and breathing exercises.
  • Watch the news to stay informed when pollen counts are high. During these times stay indoors and try to keep windows and doors closed.
  • If you have any food allergies make it a habit to read food labels for things that you are allergic to.
  • Try to use an air conditioner, air filters and/or a dehumidifier in your home and car.
