The Netti Pot

April 14, 2011

What is a netti-pot?

A netti-pot or nose bidet is a device used to clean the sinus cavities.

It is commonly shaped as an oil lamp and is usually filled with a warm saline (salt-water) solution. The spout is inserted into one nostril. The solution will go in the one nostril and come out the other side cleaning your sinuses and nasal passages.

Some people found that using the netti-pot made them feel as if they had accidentally inhaled water while swimming.

Are they effective?

Yes, they are but it only gives short-term relief to the person. The objective is to use it frequently, to wash irritants out before they cause infections. It may help to reduce snoring, a stuffy head or mouth breathing. People suffering from Chronic Sinusitis are recommended to use a netti-pot regularly as it may promote drainage of the sinuses and speed up the healing process of any inflamed tissues. It also helps to clear congestion and pressure in your sinuses and nasal passages.

Absent or Decreased Sense of Smell and Taste

February 12, 2011

When suffering from a cold, sinus infection or if you have nasal polyps you may notice that you can hardly smell or sometimes even taste your food.

The sense of Taste and Smell are linked to each other. Without smell you can still taste if your food is bitter, sweet or sour but there would be no real flavor to the food. This is because almost everything that we taste is actually due to the smell of the foods that we eat.

For some people a decreased sense or loss of smell might be minor and for others very serious.

Some examples include:

–          A burning house full of sleeping people (It would be a serious problem if you cannot smell the smoke)

–          Someone wanting to be a Top Chef (Difficulties would arise if you cannot smell and therefore taste the food correctly)

–          Or simply enjoying a nice cooked meal…

So what causes the Loss of smell and taste?

  • Nasal Obstruction and Congestion block the nasal passages/sinuses and stop aromas from reaching the smell receptors in the nose.
  • Colds and flu’s causing a stuffy nose or congestion and inflammation.
  • Allergies causing inflammation and congestion.
  • Nasal polyps (sac-like growths) which block the nasal passages and sinuses.
  • Sinusitis (sinus infections)
  • Normal Aging (worn out cilia in the nose and taste buds on the tongue)
  • Bell’s palsy (paralysis of  the facial nerve therefore unable to control the muscles on the affected side of the face)
  • Smoking tobacco and drinking alcohol (damages the cilia in the nose and taste buds on the tongue)
